First Born

Mar 06 2012 | 6 comments

When we first opened the doors to Bloom Essentials in 1997, Kim and I had no idea. No idea how much time and energy Bloom would require. No idea the roller coaster of emotions that would come with business ownership. And certainly no idea about the weight of responsibility that comes with having people depend on you for their livelihood. We were, after all, just kids ourselves.

Looking back, now that we are both mothers, it is easy to see that Bloom was truly our first born. We nurtured our business from that first day, hoping she would one day be successful and independent. Feeding her with our energy and ideas, we watched her grow slowly but surely into a strong business. Of course there were rough spots along the way when we weren't sure we were doing anything right, but small little victories kept us going and the rewards began to outweigh the sacrifices.

Bloom will turn 15 this June and we must have done something right because she has turned into a very capable teenager. We are still there, doing what we've always done, but her needs are not so immediate and demanding as they once were. The roller coaster is less scary and the weight of the responsibility is more bearable. We can enjoy being in the spa, but our team is immensely capable if we happen to not be there. We can focus more on the big picture and a little less on the laundry.

We have been thinking about this a lot lately as we raise our boys, this process of raising a business that in turn allows us to raise our babies. We feel so truly lucky to have the best of both worlds. Changing diapers, wiping noses and playing at the park means working like mad women during nap time and after bedtime, but somehow it all works out. There won't always be little people underfoot and one day we'll be back at it full time, but in the meantime we are so thankful for our first born. And so are the little faces below...

Kim spends her time chasing this little happy-go-lucky guy around.

My days are filled with this silly-yet-serious boy and his little brother, who is now 12 weeks old and making up for his early arrival.

Welcome to the twelfth and final day of our extravaganza!

Everyone's drinks sounded equally yummy so we decided to make the daily winner a randomly chosen contestant. This means Andrea S. (Peppermint white chocolate mocha? Yum!) is the lucky winner of a $25 gift certificate. Congrats! We will be in touch with Andrea and all the other daily winners by end of day today.

The Final Challenge

This one is about giving. Imagine you could give a Bloom Essentials Picasso Pedicure gift certificate to a special person. Who would that person be (no real names please) and what made you choose them?

Welcome to day 11! Thank you for sharing your best gifts ever. We are reminded that a little effort put into gift giving can really mean so much to the recipient. Oh, and we're going easy on you today as a reward for putting so much thought and effort into the last few challenges.

The story of the magical charm bracelet Bree received from her grandmother did it for us. She's earned herself a sweet little necklace from Laurel Denise. We will be in touch Bree !

Day Eleven Challenge

We don't know about you but, by this point in the season, we could really use a drink. What cocktail (or beverage if you're not the drinkin' type) signifies the holidays for you?

Welcome to day 10! Are you hanging in there? We couldn't give away pedicures for a whole year without making you work for it, now could we? Oh yes, this is a marathon, not a sprint!

We loved the idea of Andrea wishing for happiness, not just at Christmas, but at every opportunity, and not just for herself but for all people. She picks herself up a $25 gift certificate. We will be in touch Andrea!

Day Ten Challenge

What's the best or most meaningful gift you've ever received?

Welcome to day 9! How awesome were your reflections on 2011 yesterday?! You continue to blow us away with the enthusiasm you bring to each of these challenges and the honesty with which you answer our questions. We are unspeakably happy that you felt you could safely share the good and the bad from the previous year.

Rachael wins a $25 gift certificate for not sugar coating it. We will be in touch Rachael!

Day Nine Challenge

What's your Christmas wish? World peace or that Kate Spade handbag you've had your eye on? It can be as complex...or as simple as that.

Welcome to day 8! We are so impressed with the thought and effort that went into giving back to your communities. Hopefully we can all keep the spirit of giving alive all year.

In honor of all the good deeds you have done this weekend, we did one of our own in lieu of a daily prize. We love the work that Basics for Babies does and so we made a donation of cash and new items to help them meet the immense need in the lower mainland.

Day Eight Challenge

As the year draws to a close we naturally find ourselves reflecting on the past twelve months. Was there a particular moment that stood out for you this past year? A major life event that changed everything? A small thing that ended up having a big impact? Take a look back on your year and share a thing or two...

Welcome to days 6 and 7! Did you read everyone's childhood holiday memories? Once again, we were so impressed with the time and effort people put into sharing their magical Christmas experiences. What a great reminder to work really hard at making special memories for our own children.

The daily winner for yesterday is Quynh D. We loved her present-peeking confessional and so a Farmhouse Fresh gift is waiting for her. We will be in touch Quynh!

Day Six & Seven Challenge

This weekend's challenge is about giving back. It's about reaching out to people in your immediate community who are in need. On both Saturday and Sunday we want you to make the holidays better for someone else. Come back here and tell us about your two good deeds by Monday morning at 7am.
